ZybanUses:-
ZYBAN is a nicotine-free pill that can help you quit smoking. It is a prescription based medicine for smokers 18 and older. It is dispensed with a comprehensive program to aid breaking your nicotine addiction.

Chemical Composition:-
Zyban contains bupropion hydrochloride. It was initially marketed as Wellbutrin and WellbutrinSR. It is supplied as a round purple 150mg film coated tablet with the engraving "ZYBAN 150" on its surface.

How To Use:-
This medication should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, chew, divide or subdivide. Zyban is designed as a sustained release medication and mechanical destruction will reduce this effect and the chances of side effects occurring may be increased.

Dosage:-
The normal dose is one tablet twice daily for 7 to 12 weeks. Do not vary this dosage unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor. The usual recommended dosage is one 150-mg tablet in the morning for the first 3 days. Then one 150-mg tablet in the morning and one 150-mg tablet in the early evening for the duration of the course. Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart. Zyban may cause sleeplessness at first, it is best not to take Zyban near bedtime. You should generally continue smoking for the first week after starting this drug, until it reaches higher plasma levels in your blood. Do not stop taking this medication without notifying your doctor.

Side Effects:-
This medication is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include:- Dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, insomnia, nausea/vomiting, constipation, anxiety, fatigue and blurred vision may occur.

If these effects persist or worsen, discontinue the medication and notify your doctor or health care professional. You should also tell your medical practitioner about:- unusual weight loss or gain, palpitations, agitation and trouble sleeping.

The following side effects have been reported and you should also consult your doctor if you encounter:- tremor, dizziness, fainting, mood changes, slowed movements, difficulty urinating, decreased sex drive, drowsiness, seizures, mental problems, fever, muscle aches, yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Allergic reactions to this drug are possible. Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, rash, and itching.

If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, physician, health care professional or pharmacist.

Precautions:-
Before taking Zyban, make sure you declare your medical history. Of particular importance are:- seizures, head injury, brain tumor, heart disease, liver problems, kidney problems, eating disorder, any mental conditions, diabetes, allergies (especially drug allergies).

This drug may make you dizzy and affect coordination, do not drive or operate machinery until you get used to the drug's effects.

Limit or avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages; alcohol can increase your risk of seizures. Chronic alcohol users who suddenly stop the intake of alcohol while taking bupropion may increase the risk of having seizures.

Suddenly stopping certain tranquilizers (e.g., diazepam, chlordiazepoxide) is not recommended because doing so may increase the risk of having seizures. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.

You should not take ZYBAN if you:-

  • Have or have had a seizure disorder
  • Are already taking WELLBUTRINŽ, WELLBUTRIN SRŽ
  • Are taking any other medicines that contain bupropion hydrochloride
  • Have or have had an eating disorder
  • Are abruptly discontinuing use of alcohol
  • Are abruptly dsicontinuing the use of sedatives (including benzodiazepines)
  • Are currently taking or have recently taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor

The following products may cause adverse effects when taken in conjunction with Zyban:-

  • Alcohol
  • Antidepressants such as Norpramin, Pamelor, Paxil, Prozac, Tofranil, and Zoloft
  • Beta-blockers (heart and blood pressure medications) such as Inderal, Lopressor, and Tenormin
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
  • Heart-stabilizing drugs such as Rythmol and Tambocor
  • Levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa, Sinemet)
  • Orphenadrine (Norflex)
  • Phenobarbital
  • Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Steroids such as prednisone and hydrocortisone
  • Theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair)
  • Major tranquilizers such as Haldol, Risperdal and Thorazine
  • MAO inhibitors such as the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
Inform your healthcare professional of any other prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking and or will be taking with Zyban.

Do not take this medication in conjunction with nicotine gum or patches.

Do not smoke if using any nicotine products with this drug. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. Using ZYBAN and nicotine patches together may raise your blood pressure.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:-
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking this drug. This drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Teenage use:-
This medication should only be taken by people under the age of 18 under the direct supervision of a doctor or physician.

Overdose:-
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include blurred vision, lightheadedness, confusion, nausea, and seizures.

Notes:-
Do not allow anyone else to take this medication. Keep this medication away from children. Use a safe storage location as this is a prescription medication.

Missed Dosage:-
Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 8 hours of the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose.

Storage:-
Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
