US State Cigarette Tax
Cigarette taxes in the USA are set by each individual state. Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Washington pay premium prices for cigarettes due to the individual state taxes. Total tax payable per carton in these states is between $15.00 and $20.50.
Taxes in Kentucky are a mere 3c per pack. In North Carolina its is 5c per pack. Taxes havr recently been updated in various states and the increase has been as much as 70c per pack in states like Montanta and Nevada. Below you will find a listing of the approximate Cigarette Excise Taxes per state. The listings may vary and the taxes may change as states change the amounts and are listed as a guideline only. The onus rests with the purchaser to pay the relevant tax. The tax is collected in the individual state and the revenue often referred to as sin tax significantly contributes to state coffers. It is also used as a health deterrent mechanism to encourage people not to smoke.
